How you can help your favourite bands!!
This is not as hard as it seems! It is easy to tell people about your bands, send letters to stations requesting they play your favourite bands' material, and live like they are the greatest bands on earth. If you believe, you will be surprised at how quickly other people find it hard to catch on. Most world trends are caused by just one little thing, hype. Hype is not created without passion. Fans carry the most passion, therefore, hype is created by enough people getting carried away on the one thing. Mostly, the press control what people listen to, therefore what turns in to hype, but we feel it is time for other people to control it, or at least highlight the alternatives. If you don't think you can switch a few people on to your music, then you should try and see the response. You will be pleasantly surprised!
Take an example of how easy it is. When British Awareness Independent Publicity first took on The Dandys, we had no clue as to how the band would be received. We took it to the public, the reaction was good, but not great. People were forever comparing the band to Blur and Oasis. With a personal feeling Andy Firth sung like Brett Anderson, the press release was modified to include Suede as a reference. The band were then compared to Suede, with more favourable comments. Next was to turn Andy Firth in to a sex god through the press release, and this atracted even more attention. In a sense, the idea is to highlight what you have 110%, and trust us, it makes a difference.
So you have a favourite band, we all do. We all want to help them out. Go for it, and make sure you do it without being nasty. All you should have to do is show people what the band has, put it in a neat package for them, and it will be recieved well. Of course, most of you would be thinking you are just fans without the access to material etc. We were for years too. You are all aware of radio stations that have request programs. Triple J would be the best target here in Australia, because they have a very broad library, and once you are in with Triple J, the band has a greater chance of mainstream sucess. Fax, write, phone, every day if you have to. You don't need to be abusive, you just need to make it clear that the music should be on air. If you feel this doesn't help, you are wrong. Everything you do makes a difference, fan control is happening, be a part and get involved. Your favourite bands need you!!
