The 'BA' Story...

British Awareness Magazine was formed on December 16, 1997, after the news that Radiohead would tour Australia. Desperate to meet the band, Nicci Foster and Lauren Murphy decided to form the magazine, a dream that they had had for a while. The possibility of interviewing a member of Radiohead was the perfect excuse they needed to get the idea off the ground!

So, after a few faxes and phone calls to various institutions, the first interview to be conducted by British Awareness was set up for Feb. 2, 1998. This was with Phil Selway, and would become the first article for Issue Number One. Once the excitement had subsided, it became clear that more interviews and articles would be required, so the two member team strove on to search for more willing artists. Faxes were sent off to Rock'n'Roll Management in regards to the very beautiful Mansun, and to Wildlife Entertainment in search of Travis. Both received positive responses, and the next two interviews were set up for the month of Feb. This began a very strong alliance with both bands, which remains so to this day!

The 'team' began to wonder if they were dreaming, as they faxed off to Hall Or Nothing to try and link up with Manic Street Preachers, and Steve Harrison Management in hope of a chat with The Charlatans. Neither were to pan out, however, through Hall Or Nothing, British Awareness gained their most amazing contact and like-minded soul to date... Caffy St.Luce. Caffy became an instant treasure to British Awareness, and has been an inspiration and guide to everything the magazine does.

So soon, the team were flat out for hours at a time, just typing up articles, completeing articles, or working on secureing photos and updated news, and with 44 pages, and only one of them written by an outsider (Phil Collins from London) you could imagine it... But by the end of April, and after many mistakes and false starts, British Awareness was ready to take their first issue to the printer! It was an exciting moment and smiles of satisfaction were scrawled across Nicci and Lauren's faces...

Five months later, and 'BA' Number One was completed!! Not a short trip to the printer then...

However, to hold that end product was amazing, and very happy with how their hard work had ended up, Nicci and Lauren could only laugh about the delay, and how timeless their articles were, still putting a smile on the face even reading them again now.

Of course the team had not stopped during this time, and had infact grown, and progressed, and stepped into further terrortory. The British Awareness Team at present:

Nicci Foster - Managing Editor

Lauren Murphy - Associate editor

Genine Moodie - Scottish Correspondent

Caffy St.Luce - English Correspondent

Larysa Farthing, Keith O'Shea, Joseph Dwyer, Pammy B, Fiona - Contributors

So no longer is there a problem with getting passionate stories about Music, and all the joy Music brings, as British Awareness steps up it's ambitions, determined, along with Whirlpool (in the uk), to become leading forces in Music media, and show the world that 90's Britain is producing acts that rank among the best in the world... ever, despite what the NME, Melody Maker, and almost every other magazine/paper you care to name portray, the fans know it, we know it, the bands know it... do you know it?
